How do I stop Meta or TikTok from counting my purchases twice?

Turn off the extra tracking that Shopify's Facebook and TikTok apps add, and act on the Events Manager warnings about extra or older setups.

Why purchases get counted twice

An ad platform counts a purchase twice when two separate trackers report it and the platform cannot tell that both are the same purchase. To prevent this, TrueROAS sends each purchase with your order ID as its event ID. For Meta, TrueROAS's own browser tracking uses the same event IDs as the events TrueROAS sends from its servers, so when Meta gets the same event from both, it keeps only one. See What does the browser tracking switch in the Meta settings do?.

Tracking that other apps add to your store does not share these IDs. Keep one way of sending your events to each ad platform, and turn the other ones off as described below.

Meta on Shopify: turn off data sharing in the Facebook & Instagram app

Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app sends its own events to Meta. Turn its data sharing off:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Apps, then Facebook & Instagram, then Settings.
  2. Find Share data and click Change.
  3. Switch Share data off.
  4. Click Save.

TrueROAS shows these steps as three pictures, which you move through with Previous and Next:

  • In the window that opens when you turn on Meta CAPI on a Shopify store. Under Before we turn it on: it asks you to turn off data sharing in Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app, so Meta does not receive duplicate events.
  • In the Meta settings in Events Manager, under the browser tracking switch. If Meta CAPI is on, click Configure first to unfold the settings. Click How to disable Shopify's FB data sharing to open the pictures, and Hide guide to close them.

Meta: turn off automatic event tracking

In Meta Events Manager, find the setting Track events automatically without code for your dataset and make sure it is Off. TrueROAS asks you to keep it off to avoid duplicate events.

Meta: act on the warnings under Activity & health

The Activity & health section of the Meta settings in Events Manager can show two warnings about duplicates:

  • A warning that an extra Meta tracking code was detected. Meta gets many more browser events than server events, which usually means another Meta tag is still installed on your store. Remove it. On Shopify, check the data sharing of the Facebook & Instagram app first, as described above.
  • Potential Duplicate CAPI Setup Detected. Meta gets far more server events than browser events. This usually means an older Conversions API setup is still sending events without shared IDs, or a Meta tag on your store is not set up correctly. Turn off the other Conversions API setup, for example another app that sends server events to Meta.

When each warning shows is explained in What do the Meta numbers under Activity & health mean?.

Meta on WooCommerce

On a WooCommerce store, the TrueROAS WordPress plugin sends the Meta browser events once you paste your dataset ID into it. Remove other Meta tracking plugins or code from your site, so they do not send the same events a second time.

TikTok on Shopify: turn off the sales channel's tracking

TikTok's Shopify sales channel adds its own TikTok tracking to your store. That tracking sends no event ID, so TikTok cannot match its events with the ones TrueROAS sends and counts them twice. Turn it off for your store in the TikTok sales channel in your Shopify admin.

The TikTok settings in Events Manager remind you of this in an orange note. How to set up TikTok is explained in How do I send my store events and purchases to TikTok?.

Google Ads gets your sales from TrueROAS as uploads to the conversion action you pick, each with its order ID. With Also send orders without a Google Click ID on, Google can take credit for a sale that another ad platform also claims. How that switch works is explained in How do I send my sales to Google Ads with Enhanced Conversions?.

AppLovin

If you send purchases to AppLovin, how to check for duplicates there is explained in How do I send my purchases to AppLovin?.

Good to know

  • You make these changes in your Shopify admin, in your WordPress site and in Meta Events Manager, not in TrueROAS. TrueROAS cannot switch off tracking that other apps add.
  • Turning off Meta CAPI in Events Manager only stops what TrueROAS sends. Tracking from other apps keeps running.
  • The Facebook & Instagram app steps and their pictures only apply to Shopify stores. TrueROAS only sends TikTok events for Shopify stores.
  • The warnings under Activity & health use the event counts Meta reports, and only show for Meta. Events Manager has no duplicate warnings for TikTok or Google Ads.
