How do I see which channels and ads sold a product?
Open a product's sources to see its sales split by where each customer came from, with Meta ads shown by name and the biggest source first.
Open a product's sources
- Find the product in the list. To find it by name, see How do I search for a product and move through the list?.
- Click View Sources on the right of its row, or click anywhere on the row.
- The Product Details window opens with the product's name and three boxes, Revenue, Price and Quantity. They are the row's Sales, Avg. Price and Quantity Sold, as explained in What do the numbers in Product Attribution mean?.
- Under Top Sources, read the list with the columns Source and Sales. The sources are numbered from 1, with the highest sales first, and the first one has a blue border and a blue number.
- To close the window, click the close button in its top right corner, click outside the window, or press Esc.
The list holds every source of the product, not only the top ones. The Sales of all sources add up to the product's Revenue, apart from rounding to the cent.
How each sale gets its source
Attribution is how TrueROAS decides which ad or channel gets the credit for a sale. On this page it works like this:
- Each order counts toward one source, the place the customer came from on their last visit before the order, skipping direct visits. An order shows under Direct only when every visit TrueROAS found for it was a direct visit, or it found none.
- Every line of the product on that order goes to that source, so all its items count for the same source.
- Some orders always get the same source. Shopify draft orders show as Shopify Draft Order, in-person Shopify POS sales as Shopify Pos, and orders created by a subscription app, such as renewals, as Subscription.
- Orders brought in with the import of past orders get their source as described in How do I bring in orders from before I installed TrueROAS?.
What a source looks like
- Most sources show as a label with an icon, such as Meta Ad, Google Ads, TikTok Ad, Facebook, Instagram, Email, Google Organic or Direct.
- A source TrueROAS does not recognise shows the value it saved for the visit, such as a campaign name from your UTM tags, written with capital letters and spaces in a grey label with a question mark icon. A website that sent the visitor shows as its address, such as example.com. An order saved without any source shows as Unknown.
- Long labels are cut off. Hover over a label for about a second to read the full value TrueROAS saved, in lower case.
- Google Ads visits are tracked by campaign, so they show as Google Ads without the campaign's name.
- Top Source in the product list uses the same labels, so a Meta ad shows there as Meta Ad without its name. Open the window to see the name.
Meta ads by name
In the window, TrueROAS asks Meta for the name of each Meta ad, so you can see which ad sold the product.
- While TrueROAS waits for Meta, the line shows the Meta logo and Loading....
- Then you see the ad's name. When Meta also returns the campaign and the ad set, their names sit above the ad's name in small grey text.
- When Meta cannot return the ad, for example because Meta is not connected or the Facebook account you connected cannot see that ad, the ad's name is not shown. Click the line to ask Meta again.
Only Meta ads are looked up by name. Ads from other platforms show their label only.
Why sources here can differ from the Ads Manager
This window always uses the customer's last visit before the order. It does not follow the attribution model and attribution window set in the Ads Manager, or the Incremental Attribution and View-Through switches. So an order can count for one ad here while the Ads Manager gives the same order to another ad. How the models and windows work is explained in How do I change the attribution model and attribution window?.
Good to know
- The sources are the same for everyone on the store for the same date range.
- You cannot click a source to see its orders or open the ad, filter the product list by a source, or see the sources of all products at once.
