Why do sales from my ads show as untracked or organic?

Sales land under Organic & Unassigned when the link of the ad does not say which ad was clicked, and only clicks after you add the code are tracked.

What the tracking code tells TrueROAS

Attribution is how TrueROAS decides which ad gets the credit for a sale. TrueROAS records every visit to your store together with the tracking details in the link the visitor came from. Later it matches each order to the visits of that customer.

The tracking code from the UTM Manager makes the ad platform put the ID of the ad or the campaign into that link when someone clicks. That ID is what lets TrueROAS give the sale to the exact ad, ad set and campaign.

Without the code, TrueROAS can still tell that many visits came from an ad, but not from which one. In the Ads Manager those sales end up under Organic & Unassigned instead of on a campaign, for example in Meta ads (untracked), Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads (untracked) or Direct. What each of those rows holds is explained in What is Organic & Unassigned and what do its rows mean?. The messages in the UTM Manager call these sales "Facebook/Organic", "Instagram/Organic" and "Google / Organic".

Check your ads first

  1. Open Setup in the left menu and click UTM Manager.
  2. On the Meta tab, look for ads that do not show Tracking, and for ads with Incoherent Reporting or Stale Ad ID. On the Google Ads tab, look for campaigns marked Overridden or Missing trueroas. On the TikTok tab, the list only holds running ads that miss the code. What each status means is explained in What do the tracking statuses in the UTM Manager mean?.
  3. Add the code where it is missing, as described in How do I add the TrueROAS tracking code to my Meta ads?, How do I add TrueROAS tracking to my Google Ads campaigns? and How do I add the tracking code to my TikTok ads?.

The UTM Manager does not check Snapchat and Pinterest ads, so check those yourself. See How do I add tracking to my Snapchat and Pinterest ads?.

Why sales can stay untracked after you add the code

  • Only new clicks count. A visit keeps the tracking details its link had at the moment of the click. Orders from clicks before your change stay where they are. When Google Ads is connected, some Google Ads (untracked) sales are still matched to their campaign, as explained in What is Organic & Unassigned and what do its rows mean?.
  • The change is not live yet. The UTM Manager shows your ads as the ad platform has them. Publish or save the change in the ad platform, then click Update at the top of the list, or reload the page for TikTok.
  • A Google campaign has its own setting. A campaign marked Overridden ignores your account-wide tracking setting until you edit the campaign itself. See How do I add TrueROAS tracking to my Google Ads campaigns?.
  • The ad was paused when you checked. The UTM Manager only checks ads and campaigns that are running. Paused ones are not in the lists, so check again after you turn one back on.
  • The ad was never checked. Some ads cannot be checked, for example in a very large Meta ad account or in TikTok Smart+ campaigns. See How do I add the TrueROAS tracking code to my Meta ads? and How do I add the tracking code to my TikTok ads?.
  • The code points at another ad. Ads with Incoherent Reporting or Stale Ad ID can give their sales to another ad.
  • The click lost its tracking on the way. Some clicks reach your store without the link details, for example when a browser or an app removes them. Those sales stay untracked even when the code is in place.
  • Your website did not record the visit. The code cannot help when the page does not record visits. Use Test Reporting on a Meta ad marked Tracking to check, as described in What do the tracking statuses in the UTM Manager mean?.
  • Another visit got the credit. Your attribution model can give the sale to another visit of the same customer. See How do I change the attribution model and attribution window?.

When the Setup TrueROAS panel disagrees

The Add UTMs to Track Ads box in the Setup TrueROAS panel, described in How do I set up TrueROAS for the first time?, runs a shorter check than the UTM Manager:

  • For Meta, it looks at up to 100 of the running ads in your main Meta ad account.
  • For Google Ads, it only looks at the account-wide tracking template, not at the tracking settings of each campaign or at the final URL suffix.

So the box can say Ad Account & UTMs Connected, or not show at all, while the UTM Manager still lists ads or campaigns without the code. It can also say Ad Account Connected although the UTM Manager shows Tracking, for example for a Google Ads account that sends the code through its final URL suffix. Go by the UTM Manager.
