How do I track sales from an influencer or another link I share?

Add trueroas with a name you choose to any link, such as an influencer link, and the sales from it get their own row in the Ads Manager.

How it works

Any link to your store can carry a trueroas value of your own, such as an influencer's name or a discount code. TrueROAS records that value with every visit that comes through the link, and the sales from those visits show on a row named after it.

Open Setup in the left menu, click UTM Manager and pick the Influencer tab. The box there says Influencer. Copy our code and add it to the URL you're using.

  • The code is trueroas=YOUR_DISCOUNT_CODE. You replace YOUR_DISCOUNT_CODE with your own value.
  • Click the code or the copy icon next to it to copy it.
  • The grey line under the code shows a finished link: www.mywebsite.com/product?youroldutmlinks=123&trueroas=ROBIN_1_28AUG_SUMMERSALE.

The tab lists three steps, starting with Create discount code and Add your discount code to the URL the influencer uses. In practice:

  1. If you want to pair the link with a discount code, create the code in your store first.
  2. Copy the code on the Influencer tab and replace YOUR_DISCOUNT_CODE with the discount code or another name, for example the influencer's name.
  3. Add it to the end of a link to your store: after a ? when the link has none yet, otherwise after &. For example www.myshop.com?trueroas=2022jacob.
  4. Give the link to the influencer, or use it wherever you share it.

Choose the value with care:

  • Use a different value for every influencer or link, so their sales show on separate rows.
  • Use letters in the value. A value made only of digits can be read as the ID of an ad or a campaign from one of your ad platforms.
  • Leave out spaces. TrueROAS removes them, so a value typed as summer sale shows as summersale. Use a single underscore or a hyphen between words instead.
  • Keep channel names and web addresses out of the value. A value that contains a word such as tiktok, snapchat, youtube or email is treated as that channel, and a value that looks like a web address is treated as a link from another website. The row then gets that channel's icon and can end up inside its group, such as Email or Websites & links.

Where the sales show

Sales from the link show in the Ads Manager under Organic & Unassigned, on a row that shows the value from your link. The tab's third step still calls this section Other campaigns. What else is in Organic & Unassigned is explained in What is Organic & Unassigned and what do its rows mean?.

Attribution is how TrueROAS decides which ad gets the credit for a sale. A sale only lands on the link's row when your attribution model gives the credit to the visit through the link. If the same customer also clicked one of your ads, the ad can get the sale instead. See How do I change the attribution model and attribution window?.

How quickly new orders show up is explained in Why are my newest orders or ad spend not showing yet?.

Good to know

  • The rows show for everyone on the store.
  • The value in the link is not tied to the discount code. Orders where the code was used without a click on the link do not show on the link's row. Discount codes have their own Coupons group, described in What is Organic & Unassigned and what do its rows mean?.
  • The tab only gives you the code. There is nothing to connect, and TrueROAS does not check your links for you.
  • The link must lead to your store, because TrueROAS records the value when the visitor lands there.
  • The same code works for any link you share, such as a partner newsletter or a bio link, not only influencer links.
