How do I add monthly costs like apps, rent or payment fees?
Add Custom Costs in Cost Manager as a fixed monthly amount or a share of revenue, and see how TrueROAS spreads them over your dates.
Add a custom cost
Custom costs are the costs of running your business that are not tied to a product, such as apps, software, rent, salaries or payment fees. The Dashboard takes them off your profit in cards such as Blended Profit.
- Open Cost Manager under Setup in the left menu.
- Scroll down to Custom Costs and click Add New Custom Cost.
- In the Add Custom Cost window, use the switch to pick the kind of cost:
- Fixed Monthly Amount for the same amount every month, such as an app subscription or rent.
- % of Revenue for a cost that grows with your sales, such as payment processor fees.
- Enter a Cost Name, for example Klaviyo or Stripe Fees.
- Enter the Monthly Cost Amount in your store currency, or the Revenue Percentage, for example 2.9 for 2.9%.
- Click Save Cost.
The cost appears in the table under Custom Costs. Cost Amount shows the amount with Fixed Monthly or % of Revenue under it, and Timeframe shows the day the cost starts, followed by Open ended.
Save Cost stays greyed out until the cost has a name and an amount. A box headed Please complete the following required fields: lists anything still missing. A percentage above 100 shows Percentage cannot exceed 100% and cannot be saved.
Warning: If you already entered your payment fees as the Processing Fee under Cost of Goods, don't add them again as a % of Revenue cost, or they can be counted twice. See How do I add my product costs in Cost Manager?.
How a custom cost is counted
A new cost starts on the day you add it and has no end date. A date range that ends before that day does not include it.
- Fixed Monthly Amount. TrueROAS divides the amount by the number of days in the current month, whichever dates you look at, and counts that daily share for each day of your date range from the day you added the cost. For example, when the current month has 31 days, 310 a month counts as 10 a day, so 7 days in your date range add 70.
- % of Revenue. TrueROAS takes that share of the Total Sales of your whole date range, as long as the range ends on or after the day you added the cost. Sales from the days before that day are included too.
To see what each cost comes to for your dates, look under Custom Costs in Cost Breakdown, the table of your costs on the Dashboard. Which cards count your custom costs is explained in Which ad spend and costs does each Dashboard card add up?.
Change or remove a cost
To change a cost:
- In the Custom Costs table, click the amount under Cost Amount. The Add Custom Cost window opens with the cost filled in.
- Enter the new amount. To change the kind of cost, use the switch and enter the amount again.
- Click Save Cost.
The new amount counts for every day since the cost started, also for dates in the past.
To delete a cost, click Remove on its row, or Reset in its window. The cost is deleted straight away, without asking first, and it disappears from every date range, including dates before you removed it.
Good to know
- Custom costs are saved for the whole store, so everyone on the store sees the same profit. Anyone who can open Cost Manager can add, change or remove them. See What can team members see and change on the Dashboard and Ads Manager?.
- The COGS, Profit and ROAS / POAS columns in the Ads Manager leave custom costs out. Leave them out of your break-even ROAS too, because the Dashboard takes them off separately. See How do I set my break-even ROAS and use it instead of product costs?.
- For ad spend on a platform TrueROAS can't connect to, use hand-entered spend instead of a custom cost, so the spend shows next to the sales it brings. See How do I add ad spend from a platform TrueROAS can't connect to?.
- Saving or removing a custom cost also starts the check of your recent orders described in How do I add my product costs in Cost Manager?. Custom costs are not part of that check, and the Dashboard includes them the next time it loads.
- You cannot choose a start or end date, add a one-off cost, or give a cost to one channel only.
