What is the UTM Manager and what can I do there?
A tour of the UTM Manager, where you copy the tracking code for each ad platform and check which of your ads and campaigns already send it.
What the UTM Manager is for
Attribution is how TrueROAS decides which ad gets the credit for a sale. To give a sale to the exact ad, ad set or campaign, TrueROAS needs the link of each visit to say which ad was clicked. You get that by adding a short tracking code, also called UTM or URL parameters, to your ads. The ad platform then adds it to every click.
The UTM Manager is where you copy that code for each ad platform. On the Meta, Google Ads and TikTok tabs it also checks which of your ads or campaigns already send it. Every code adds a parameter called trueroas to the link. Most codes hold a placeholder, such as {{ad.id}} on Meta, that the ad platform replaces with the real ID or name when someone clicks.
What happens to your sales when an ad is missing the code is explained in Why do sales from my ads show as untracked or organic?.
Open the UTM Manager
Open Setup in the left menu and click UTM Manager. The page is titled Ad Tracking Settings and always opens on the Meta tab. Where the menu groups sit is explained in How do I find pages in the menu and fold it in?.
You can also get here from:
- The View attribution details button in the Want to see the attribution details? box under the Ads Manager table.
- The Add UTMs button in the Add UTMs to Track Ads box of the Setup TrueROAS panel. It opens the same tabs in a window, on the first of Meta, Google Ads and TikTok that still needs the code. See How do I set up TrueROAS for the first time?.
The tabs
| Tab | What you find there | Checks your ads |

What a tab holds, from top to bottom
- The connect button or the ad account list. Before you connect, you see Connect via Facebook (or Re-Connect via Facebook) on the Meta tab, You don't have an active Google integration. with Connect Google Ads on the Google Ads tab, and Connect TikTok Ads, Connect Snapchat Ads or Connect Pinterest Ads on those tabs. After you connect, the tab shows the ad account list instead, such as the Meta ad account field on the Meta tab or Select Google Ad Account on the Google Ads tab. On the Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and Snapchat tabs, a line under the list greets you by name and says which ad account is in use, for example is your active ad account. The Influencer and AppLovin tabs have no connect button.
- A blue box with the code. The title of the box says where the code goes, and the code sits in a frame below it. Click the code or the copy icon at the right end of the frame to copy it. A message confirms it, for example Copied "trueroas={{ad.id}}". On most tabs a small grey line under the frame shows an example link with the code in place.
- View instructional video, on the Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and Pinterest tabs. Click it to play a short video on the page.
- The check of your ads, on the Meta, Google Ads and TikTok tabs, under the title Track Tag (UTM) Manager. It runs by itself when you open the tab. What each status means is explained in What do the tracking statuses in the UTM Manager mean?. If a list stays empty, see Why is the ad list in the UTM Manager empty or not loading?.
The ad account lists are the same as elsewhere in TrueROAS, so picking another ad account here changes it for the Dashboard and the Ads Manager too. Connecting and picking ad accounts is explained in How do I connect or change the ad account behind the Meta, Google and Tiktok tabs?, How do I connect, refresh or disconnect my Facebook account for Meta Ads?, How do I connect Snapchat Ads? and How do I connect Pinterest Ads?.
On the Meta tab, the question mark icon in the top right corner opens a guide titled Meta Ads UTMs, with the line How to get your Meta ads reporting properly in TrueROAS.
Good to know
- Copying a code and running the checks never change anything in your ad accounts. The only button on the page that changes an ad account is Add tracking on the Google Ads tab. See How do I add TrueROAS tracking to my Google Ads campaigns?.
- The checks read your ads from the ad platform each time you open the tab or click Update. Nothing is saved, so there is no history of earlier checks.
- Opening another tab stops a check that is still loading. It runs again when you come back to the tab.
- UTM Manager is in your menu when your Settings permission is set to View or Edit. See What can team members see and change on the Dashboard and Ads Manager?.
- The UTM Manager is open on every plan, and it stays open when the rest of TrueROAS is locked because your subscription has ended or a payment failed, so you can always copy the codes.
- On screens up to 860 px wide, the row of tabs scrolls sideways and shows arrows. The question mark icon on the Meta tab is hidden on screens up to 465 px wide. The lists keep the same columns on a phone.
- You cannot change the codes, add a tab or turn the checks off.
