How do I add TrueROAS tracking to my Google Ads campaigns?
Click Add tracking to set the TrueROAS tracking template in your Google Ads account, or paste it yourself, then fix campaigns that override it.
The code Google Ads needs
Google Ads needs {lpurl}?trueroas={campaignId} as its tracking template. {lpurl} stands for the landing page of the ad and {campaignId} for the ID of the campaign. Google fills in both when someone clicks.
- Open Setup in the left menu, click UTM Manager and open the Google Ads tab.
- Click the code or the copy icon next to it. You see Copied "{lpurl}?trueroas={campaignId}".
- The box tells you where the setting is in Google Ads: Admin, then Account settings, then Tracking.
The sentence in the box says to paste the code into your account-wide final URL suffix. Paste it into Tracking template instead. The code is a tracking template, the picture under the box shows it in the Tracking template field, and Add tracking also writes to the tracking template.
If Google Ads is not connected, the tab shows You don't have an active Google integration. and Connect Google Ads. Connecting and picking the account are explained in How do I connect or change the ad account behind the Meta, Google and Tiktok tabs? and How do I connect, re-link or unlink Google Ads on the Integrations page?.
See which campaigns send it
When Google Ads is connected and an account is picked, the Track Tag (UTM) Manager list shows your enabled campaigns, sorted by name. Grey placeholder rows show while it loads.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Campaign | The campaign name and, under it, ID followed by the campaign ID. |
| Type | The kind of campaign, for example Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen or Video. |
| Status | Tracking, Overridden or Missing trueroas, with a short line next to it. What they mean is explained in What do the tracking statuses in the UTM Manager mean?. |
The message above the list sums it up. All 12 active campaigns use the TrueROAS tracking URL. Well done! means every campaign sends the code. Otherwise it reads, for example, 3 of 12 active campaigns are not sending the TrueROAS tracking URL. Clicks from these show up as "Google / Organic" instead of the campaign that earned them.
Google uses the most specific setting it finds. Hovering over the question mark icon next to the list title explains this under Which setting counts?: Google uses the most specific one: a campaign's own tracking template or final URL suffix replaces the account-wide value.
Add tracking with one click
When at least one campaign misses the code and your account-wide setting has no TrueROAS code either, the message above the list also says Set the tracking URL once at account level and every campaign without its own setting picks it up. and shows an Add tracking button.
- Click Add tracking. The button reads Adding... while it works. It does not ask you to confirm.
- When it is done, you see Account-wide tracking template has been set, and the list loads again.
- If you see Could not set the tracking template. Check your Google Ads role or contact support., click Update to see what was saved, then add the code by hand as described below.
What Add tracking changes in your Google Ads account:
- The account-wide tracking template. When it is empty, it becomes
{lpurl}?trueroas={creative}. When it already holds a template, TrueROAS keeps it and adds trueroas={creative} as an extra parameter, or replaces the value of a trueroas parameter that is already there. {creative} is Google's placeholder for the ID of the ad that was clicked, so this differs from the code on the tab. Both count as Tracking. - The tracking template of every Performance Max campaign that is not removed, paused ones included. Each gets trueroas={campaignId} in the same way.
- Nothing else. Final URL suffixes, the tracking settings of your other campaigns, ad groups and ads stay as they are.
The account-wide template is saved first and the Performance Max campaigns after it, so after an error part of the change can already be saved.
Add the code by hand
- In Google Ads, open Admin, then Account settings, then Tracking.
- Paste
{lpurl}?trueroas={campaignId}into Tracking template. If the field already holds a template, keep it and add&trueroas={campaignId}at the end, or?trueroas={campaignId}if the template has no question mark yet. - Save the change in Google Ads.
- Back in TrueROAS, click Update at the top of the list. Open Google Ads, next to it, opens your Google Ads campaigns in a new browser tab.
Fix campaigns marked Overridden
A campaign marked Overridden has the line This campaign has its own tracking setting without trueroas, so it ignores your account-wide one. Edit the campaign's tracking template. When your account-wide setting is fine but such campaigns exist, the message above the list says Your account-wide setting is fine. The campaigns below override it with their own tracking template or URL suffix. and has no Add tracking button.
- In Google Ads, open the settings of the campaign.
- Add trueroas={campaignId} to the campaign's own tracking template, or remove the campaign's own tracking template or final URL suffix so the account-wide one applies.
- Save, then click Update in TrueROAS.
Add tracking only does this for Performance Max campaigns. Other campaigns with a tracking template of their own show Overridden until you edit them.
Good to know
- Add tracking changes your Google Ads account itself, so the change counts for the whole store and for every other tool that uses that Google Ads account. TrueROAS has no undo button. To reverse it, change the tracking template back in Google Ads.
- If your account-wide template sends clicks through another tool's link, Add tracking adds trueroas to the end of that template. Check the result in Google Ads.
- Paused and removed campaigns are not in the list. A paused campaign is checked again once you enable it.
- Hovering over a status shows the tracking template that applies to the campaign, not its final URL suffix. A campaign that sends the code through its final URL suffix can show No tracking template there while its status is Tracking.
- Ten campaigns show at first, and more appear as you scroll.
- On a phone, the list keeps its three columns, and Update and Open Google Ads sit under the list title.
- What happens to the sales you already have is explained in Why do sales from my ads show as untracked or organic?. Error messages above the list are explained in Why is the ad list in the UTM Manager empty or not loading?.
