How do I send my store events and purchases to TikTok?
Connect TikTok, choose your TikTok ID and switch on TikTok CAPI so TrueROAS sends store activity and purchases from your Shopify store to TikTok.
What it does
TrueROAS sends what shoppers do in your Shopify store, such as viewing a product or adding it to the cart, and your purchases to TikTok from its own servers. TikTok uses them to count results and to find more buyers. Which events are sent and how often is explained in What does TrueROAS send to each ad platform, and how often?.
Before you start
- Your store runs on Shopify. TrueROAS does not send TikTok events for other store types.
- Connect TikTok and pick your TikTok ad account for the store, as described in How do I connect or change the ad account behind the Meta, Google and Tiktok tabs?. TrueROAS then lists the TikTok IDs of that ad account for you.
- If your plan needs the CAPI add-on, the cards in Events Manager are greyed out until you add it. See Do I need the CAPI add-on to send events to ad platforms?.
Open the TikTok settings
- Open Setup in the left menu and click Events Manager.
- Click TikTok Events API.
- If you see Connect TikTok instead of the settings, TrueROAS has no TikTok connection to use for you yet. Click it, log in to TikTok Ads and allow access. TikTok then sends you back to TrueROAS. Open Events Manager again and click TikTok Events API.
The settings start with the TikTok CAPI row and a short guide with the two steps below.
Step 1: Choose your TikTok ID
Your TikTok ID is the code of the web event set in TikTok Events Manager that receives what TrueROAS sends.
- When your TikTok ad account is picked, the first row has a list of the TikTok IDs in that account, each with its name and code. Pick one. It is saved straight away and a message confirms it.
- When there is no list, the row has a text field instead. Paste the ID from the Settings tab in TikTok Events Manager, then click outside the field to save it.
- The Events Manager link at the right of the row opens TikTok Events Manager in a new tab.
Step 2: Add a custom token (optional)
The guide calls this step Add a custom token (optional). You can skip it. Without a token of your own, TrueROAS sends to TikTok with the TikTok connection of the person who first chose the TikTok ID, or with the store owner's TikTok connection when that one is not available.
To add a token:
- In the Access token row, click Add token.
- Paste the token into the field that reads Paste your Events API access token.
- Press Enter or click outside the field. You see TikTok access token saved.
Cancel closes the field.
To find the token, click How do I generate this? under the row. It opens How to get your Events API access token:
- Open TikTok Events Manager. In TikTok Ads Manager it is under Assets, then Events.
- Open your web events and go to the Settings tab.
- Scroll to Events API and click Generate Access Token.
- Copy the token and paste it into TrueROAS.
A saved token shows only its first 8 and last 4 characters. Click the eye button (Reveal, then Hide) to see it in full, or Replace to paste a new one. The guide link then reads How do I get a new one?.
Step 3: Turn on TikTok CAPI
- Once your TikTok ID is saved, a switch appears in the TikTok CAPI row at the top.
- Turn it on. There is no confirmation window. You see Activated CAPI for tiktok, the tag next to TikTok CAPI turns from orange to green, and the row reads Sending server-side conversion events to TikTok.
- To stop sending, turn the switch off. You see Deactivated CAPI for tiktok.
The header of the settings, TikTok CAPI · Configuration, shows Active, Ready to start, or 1/2 done while your TikTok ID is still missing.
Turn off TikTok's own Shopify tracking
Under the settings, an orange note asks you to turn off the tracking that TikTok's Shopify sales channel adds to your store, because otherwise TikTok counts your events twice. Why, and what to do, is explained in How do I stop Meta or TikTok from counting my purchases twice?.
Test your events (optional)
Once your TikTok ID is saved, Test Event Code · optional appears under the settings, with the text Validate events in TikTok's Test Events tab before going live.
- Click Add.
- Paste the code from the Test Events tab in TikTok Events Manager.
- Click Save. You see Test event code saved, and the code shows after Current:.
While a code is saved, TrueROAS adds it to every event it sends to TikTok. When you are done testing, click Edit, empty the field and click Save.
After it is on
The settings fold away once TikTok CAPI is on. Click Edit settings to show them again, and Hide settings to fold them. With the settings open, Watch live events in TikTok at the bottom opens TikTok Events Manager.
Good to know
- The settings apply to the whole store.
- On a store that is not on Shopify, the switch can be on, but nothing is sent to TikTok.
- The TikTok settings have no Activity & health section, so Events Manager does not show how many events TikTok received or whether TikTok refused any. Check this in TikTok Events Manager.
- TikTok always gets the full order value. Sending profit instead is only possible for Meta and Google Ads. See Can I send profit instead of order value to Meta and Google?.
- A custom token shorter than 20 characters is not saved.
- Anyone on the store who can open Events Manager can reveal a saved custom token.
- The TikTok card in General Settings opens the same settings. See What is Feed Ad Platforms True Data in General Settings?.
